02Meaning behind the name

A word that comes from ancient Rome

“ius” (also written “jus”) is a cornerstone of Roman law and lives on in much of modern legal language.

IUSJUS
ius / jus· Law & right

In Latin “ius” means both “law” and “right” — the right a citizen holds by virtue of citizenship. It is the core concept of Roman law.

iustitia· Justice

The modern word “justice” derives directly from “ius”; it is symbolized by the scales.

iuris prudentia· Jurisprudence

“iuris prudentia” is the root of “jurisprudence”. Words like “jurist” and “injury” share the same root.

jus vs. lex

Romans distinguished “jus” from “lex”: jus is law/right in the abstract, ideal sense, while lex is the concrete, written statute. Statutes (leges) were the tools through which jus was applied.

Why both “ius” and “jus”?

The Latin alphabet had no letter “j”; Romans used only “i”. The “i” before a vowel later became “j”. That is why “ius” and “jus” are the same word.

“Jus est ars boni et aequi”
“Law is the art of the good and the equitable.” — Celsus (Roman jurist)
